Jorge says
Calling on a stranger in the U.S.A. will usually get a man nowhere, young Hispanic men new to the ‘states need to realize that there is a culture gap such that even a traditional aesthetic compliment or ‘piropo’ (example-“It must be still spring, because the flowers are in bloom.”)which is acceptable in their culture, can be an invitation to trouble in an American neighborhood, or an invitation to being unfavorably labelled at best. It’s best to pass up a chance to engage a woman in the street unless you have seen each other a few times (bus stop, for example) and proceed carefully after that. In my experience, people in the U.S. are not as socially fluid as they are in most of Latin America, and women can be easily spooked or offended if you’re too forward/friendly too soon.
