“Not Your Baby” App

September 14, 2012 By HKearl

If you’re like me and tend to freeze up or draw a blank when you experience harassment, here’s a great resource to help you out, from our partner in Canada, METRAC. (They’re also the organization that also founded community safety audits).

Via their press release:

“On September 10, 2012, METRAC released a free iPhone app, “Not Your Baby”, to help users deal with sexual harassment. Once installed, the app will allow users to input where they are – such as work, school or on the street – and who’s harassing them – such as a boss, coworker or fellow student. A response will be generated “in the moment”, based on the input of 238 people who shared what they’ve done to deal with similar instances of harassment. “Not Your Baby” also includes their stories and tips and allows users to submit their own….

“Not Your Baby” stands as an example of the power of technology to help people take action, including women, young women, LGBTTIQQ2S and other groups most at risk of sexual and gender-based harassment. It is available on iTunes and by visiting METRAC’s website, www.metrac.org.”

What a great idea!

The Torontoist has more:

“METRAC communications director Andrea Gunraj described the app as “another tool that people can use to feel empowered,” rather than a cure-all for sexual harassment. She pointed to work by groups including the White Ribbon Campaign, for encouraging men, who are overwhelmingly the perpetrators of sexual harassment, to talk about the behaviour and its impact. She sees a need for more resources for men, including those “who want to diffuse harassment, who want to say something and don’t know how.”

According to Gunraj, it’s up to communities to initiate the uncomfortable social conversations that can lead to reflection and change. She noted that “the biggest barrier is speaking about it and seeing it as a problem. Too often we accept harassment as a fact of life.””

28 DC Metro Stations Have Anti-Sexual Harassment Ads

June 7, 2012 By HKearl

Metro ad. Image via @aliciasanchez

Sexual harassment and assault are common problems on public transportation systems worldwide, including in Washington, DC.

To address this problem, over the past two weeks in DC, the Washington Metropolitan Area Transportation Authority (WMATA) has rolled out a public service announcement (PSA) campaign in 28 subway stations. Many stations have both English and Spanish versions. The PSA states that the harassment is not okay and lists information about how to report it.

Background: Since February, I’ve been part of a team at Collective Action for Safe Spaces pressuring WMATA to do more about sexual harassment and assault. We testified in February before the DC City Council, specifically before Ward 4 City Council Member Muriel Bowser. Bowser was very disturbed by the information we shared with her and asked WMATA to address it. Thankfully, WMATA is addressing it, including through the newly launched PSAs.

Stations: Here is a list of the Metro stations where you can find the ads:

Mama Salwa

May 13, 2012 By HKearl

One of my favorite anti-street harassment initiatives is called The Adventures of Salwa and it’s run by activists in Beirut, Lebanon. In video clips and comic strips, we see cartoon character Salwa take on street harassers and sexual harassers in many situations, using her magical red purse.

The last video released in the series is called “Mama Salwa” and in it we see where Salwa learns how to take on harassers and abusers. From her mama.

(Hopefully the mom also called the police on him since we know perps like that tend to be repeat offenders.)

My mom is also very instrumental in influencing me to stand up to those who harm others. She is very, very passionate about righting wrongs, and fighting injustice and I am proud to have inherited some of her passion and drive.

To all the moms like mine and Salwa’s who taught their children right from wrong and that you can and should speak out against injustice (whether it’s injustices done to you or others), thank you, and happy Mother’s Day.
