Welcome Our New Volunteer!

September 9, 2018 By HKearl

I’m excited to welcome our new volunteer social media and website manager!

Meghna Bhat, PhD (she/her/hers), a former SSH blog correspondent, will be helping SSH for the next few months, primarily managing our twitter and instagram accounts and the blog! Yay!

Meghna is a pro bono gender and social justice scholar and educator whose work is informed by being a survivor of sexual violence and street harassment, a first-generation immigrant from India, and South Asian woman. Meghna has 14 years of extensive work experiences both in campus and community settings, ranging from interdisciplinary gender violence research and writing, program administration and consultation, education, and community organizing.

She worked at the California Coalition Against Sexual Assault (CALCASA) in the PreventConnect program for a year. Meghna is honored to have recently joined the Board of Directors at the National Girls and Women of Color Council, Inc. She received her PhD in Criminology, Law, and Justice from the University of Illinois at Chicago (UIC) with a specialization in Gender and Women Studies.

Apply: Social Media and Website Manager (Unpaid)

July 12, 2018 By HKearl

SSH is seeking someone who can work 5-10 hours a week, primarily managing the organization’s social media and website content. This is an unpaid, remote position. This is an ideal job for someone seeking volunteer experience in the nonprofit field, a student seeking course credit and/or someone who is passionate about ending street harassment! We will be happy to work with colleges/universities to ensure that the experience meets the requirements necessary for course credit.

The main job duties would entail:

  • Posting information about street harassment on social media (primarily Facebook, Twitter and Instagram).
  • Posting street harassment story submissions on the blog
  • Writing short blog posts about relevant issues in the news.
  • Conducting a few interviews for the blog with anti-street harassment activists or highlighting new anti-street harassment initiatives on the blog.
  • Writing up the annual 16 Memorable Stories of Standing up to Street Harassers article for the Pixel Project (see the 2017 article for an example), to be cross-posted on the SSH blog.
  • Coordinating SSH’s online action for the 16 Days of Activism Against Gender-Based Violence Campaign (Nov. 25 to Dec. 10).
  • Assisting with #GivingTuesday (November 27, 2018) online fundraising.

The person would report directly to SSH’s founder Holly Kearl.

This position would start in late-August (exact date can be flexible) and conclude sometime in December (exact date can be flexible), with the option to extend into 2019.

Qualifications:

An ideal candidate will be:

  • An excellent writer.
  • Experienced at using social media, particularly for campaigns/causes.
  • A self-starter who requires minimal supervision.
  • Knowledgeable about gender issues and/or social justice activism.
  • Well-versed about what street harassment is and why stopping it is important.

Familiarity with online fundraising would be a plus.

Please send a one-page cover letter and resume/CV to Holly Kearl, stopstreetharassment@gmail.com by August 18, 2018.

Volunteers Needed During Maternity Leave

May 30, 2018 By HKearl

My first child was recently born and has some medical issues that will be requiring more of my time. As a result, I am looking for a few volunteers who can help with SSH’s social media pages and posting story submission on the blog. Ideally it’d be great to have a few volunteers who can manage a specific day of the week (e.g. Mondays) for the next few weeks, about 30-60 minutes per day, and who can work with minimal supervision from me after the initial on-boarding. Please reach out to me at StopStreetHarassment@Gmail.com if you’re interested and please share a little bit about yourself and your experiences with social media / WordPress, as well as your availability and geographic location. – Holly

Social Media, Graphics, and Translation Volunteers Needed!!

February 27, 2017 By HKearl

International Anti-Street Harassment Week is coming up and we are looking for volunteers to help us with social media, graphic design and translations! This is a very busy time a year when lots of eyes are on our accounts and we need all the help we can get.

Social Media Volunteers:

We are looking for at least FIVE volunteers (can be from anywhere in the world, bilingual with English and another language/s slightly preferred). The plan is you will be in charge of one weekday per week (e.g. Tuesday would be “your” day) to manage our SSH Twitter, Instagram, and Tumblr pages as well as the Anti-Street Harassment Week Facebook page. You’ll also have access to Pinterest and YouTube if you want to post anything there. You will receive a document with guidelines and suggested content. It’s anticipated you will spend 30-60 minutes across “your” day.

  • During Anti-SH Week, if there is a Tweet chat scheduled on “your” day, you are encouraged to join it and possibly represent SSH for it, too.
  • If you want to guest blog for SSH, you will be welcome as well.

Timeframe is: starting ASAP and going through April 10 (if you want to continue past that date, that would be fine).

Please contact: HKearl@stopstreetharassment.org with brief info about you, your social media experience and availability.

Graphic Design Volunteer:

We are looking for volunteers who can create some shareable graphics for social media to be used by participating groups and people of International Anti-Street Harassment Week. They will be posted here: http://www.meetusonthestreet.org/tools/ and here: http://www.meetusonthestreet.org/images/

Timeframe is: starting ASAP, to have them completed by March 19.

Please contact: HKearl@stopstreetharassment.org with brief info about you and samples of your graphic design work.

Translation Volunteers:

We are looking for volunteers who can help translate some text for graphics and flyers into a few languages, namely, Spanish, French, Arabic (and any others welcome). They will be posted here: http://www.meetusonthestreet.org/tools/ and here: http://www.meetusonthestreet.org/images/

Timeframe is: starting ASAP, to have them all completed by March 19.

Please contact: HKearl@stopstreetharassment.org with brief info about you and the language/s you can translate.

Three Ways to Help Stop Street Harassment in 2017

January 6, 2017 By HKearl

A new year is upon us and if you are looking for ways to get involved in making the world a better, safer and more equitable place, we can help! Here are three things you can do this year, immediately, to help raise awareness about street harassment — and work to end it.

1. Apply to join our first Blog Correspondents cohort of 2017. This volunteer position entails writing a monthly article (500-800 words) about street harassment and/or activism in your community. This is an important way to show this is a problem all over the world… and that there are people all over the world dedicated to ending it. The position runs from January (now!) to April 2017, apply today.

2. Plan to take action during International Anti-Street Harassment Week. From April 2 to 8, 2017, hundreds of groups and tens of thousands of people all over the world will join together to raise awareness about street harassment. This is the 7th year and in the past, groups in up to 41 countries have participated by marching, wheatpasting, sidewalk chalking, holding workshops and rallies, writing op-eds and holding tweet chats. How will you take part?

3. Spread the word about the National Street Harassment Hotline. You never know who will need this toll-free 24/7 support — spread the word over social media or in person about the hotline. You can also donate to help cover the cost of running it in 2017.
