Harasser in East Boston, Massachusetts

August 8, 2009 By Contributor

It was not too late one night in East Boston, MA. My roommate and I were walking home down Meridian Street around 8 pm. We keep to ourselves in East Boston, where many men have no problem with trying to pick up women they don’t know.

As we walked by the park (near the Shaws), I noticed an older Hispanic man, possibly in his thirties or forties, and his friend eyeing us from their bench. I took a moment to memorize their faces as best I could, and sure enough, as we walked by he called out,

“Hey, como estas? Como estas? Hey…Hey! Hey chica! Como estas!”

We ignored him, rolling our eyes at each other and continued out walk home when out of the corner of my eye I saw him get up from his bench and walk toward us, still calling to us. He tried to get between us, but at the moment he got up, I turned around, threw an arm out towards him and roared,

“GET AWAY FROM ME!”

The man shrunk back like he’d been bitten by a wild dog. He went back to his bench in silence and sat back down. We made our quick escape back to the house, but the whole way I looked back to make sure he wasn’t following us.

When we arrived home, I hastily called the police, gave the best info I could, but I know nothing happened with that. It was really scary, especially when it wasn’t even that late out. Lots of men do this sort of thing in East Boston in the daytime, focusing their eyes and words on a woman’s rear end or breasts and being shameless about it.

I suggest all women in East Boston, and Boston in general keep their phones and cameras on them at all times.

Sick Perv

June 5, 2009 By Contributor

Yesterday around 12:30PM I was walking down a narrow street in Brooklyn (61st Street, between 8th and 9th Avenue) and there was a man wearing a red tshirt walking really slowly in front of me and taking up the entire sidewalk. I was in a rush so I walked faster, hoping to get ahead of him. When I quickened my pace, he started walking faster as well (I was wearing flip flops so he could hear me walking faster) which I thought was a little odd. I kept walking faster, and he kept walking faster, but I ultimately got in front of him, but I could still hear him walking really fast behind me to try and catch up which made me feel slightly nervous. I felt a poke from behind and I turned around and the sick perv had his penis hanging out. Now that he had my attention he resumed his slow pace. I was too shocked/disgusted/angered to say or do anything so I just crossed the street and walked in the opposite direction.

Polite Smile = Invitation to Stalk?

May 23, 2009 By Contributor

Almost everyday I deal with men who are trying to get my attention just because I am a young woman who commutes to work everyday by myself, so I am always keeping to myself. However, if spoken to I am usually a cheerful person and will smile and take the other person into consideration in certain cases.

One day while commuting home during rush hour, I accidentally smiled politely as I walked by a man boarding the train a couple of cars down from where I was walking to, and without realizing it he started following behind me to board the same car as me.

After that, he wouldn’t stop trying to talk to me, and made it clear that he assumed many things about me like he thought I was a German foreigner (probably because I hadn’t acted like he either didn’t exist or scowled at him or something), and he insisted on trying to find out as much as he could about me and following me off when I was trying to transfer. I eventually lost him in the rush of people while going to another train, but ever since I have changed my commute route after work so that I don’t have to run into this guy again.

Class Act

May 10, 2009 By Contributor

Getting onto a city bus, a group of guys walked over just to stare at my butt while I got on. When guys follow me around grocery stores, even when I have my boyfriend with me, what makes them think in anyway I’m going to be flattered by somebody following me around? It’s scary more than anything. Walking and getting followed by cars, ugh. I actually had to tell a group of guys to leave me alone because they were freaking me out a couple of days ago, they then proceeded to call me a bitch in front of everybody and flipped me off, and sped away. Class act huh?
