Giving Tuesday – Fund the Hotline

November 29, 2021 By HKearl

Over 400 people used our National Street Harassment Hotline this past year to receive emotional support and advice. We are grateful to our partners at RAINN who run the hotline for us and to our donors who cover the costs of running the hotline.

For our Giving Tuesday campaign this year, we invite you to donate $10 or more toward the hotline. The costs of running it go up the more visitors there are, and while the minimum cost per month is $275, every month since April, the visitors and cost has been up, sometimes as high as $1000 per month. Our goal is to raise $5000 for 2022 to ensure we are ready for a continued increase user-ship. 100% of the funds raised will go directly toward running the hotline.

Thank you so much for your help and for ensuring that people in need can receive assistance and support.

Donate for Giving Tuesday, 2018!

November 27, 2018 By HKearl

Where did you first experience sexual harassment?

If I had to guess, I’d say it was when you were in a public space, like a street, store, bus, restaurant, swimming pool, or park.

Our 2018 national survey, funded in large part by our 2017 Giving Tuesday campaign, shows that public spaces are where people were most likely to first experience this type of violation… often as a teenager or younger! Public spaces also are the most common place to experience sexual harassment, period.

This is not okay and we need YOUR help to change this.

Indeed, we work hard every day to change this reality:

  • We run a website for people to share their stories and find resources (nearly 2 million people have visited).
  • We fund the only national hotline where people can find support, run by staff at the Rape, Abuse & Incest National Network.
  • We conduct research that informs policy. In 2019, we hope to conduct a five-year update to our 2014 ground-breaking study on street harassment.
  • We mobilize community action globally each spring through International Anti-Street Harassment Week.
  • We work on local efforts, like the anti-harassment transit campaign in Washington, D.C.

This year, we commemorated 10 years of action. Across that time, we have seen a lot of positive change, including more people recognizing that this is a human rights violation and more people and entities taking action to stop it.

With your support, we can continue our important work in 2019, including running the national street harassment hotline, Anti-SH Week, and doing new research.

Most of our funds come from individual donors. With a small nonprofit like ours, your funds literally make the difference between us being able to do programming and not.  Please, take this opportunity to invest in a future where everyone is safe in public spaces!

Keep the Street Harassment Hotline “Going and Growing”

November 29, 2016 By HKearl

125-callers-to-hotlineWe would be no where without our generous supporters! Thanks to donations made last year, we were able to launch the first-ever National Street Harassment Hotline and cover the monthly costs of running it since July.

Here’s what one caller shared with us (and she said we could share it here):

“I am very excited to find this program exists. It feels a niche that has needed to be filled for a long time. I spent days searching the Internet before I found this program and it is a beautiful thought. There isn’t much support for people who experience street harassment and even friends can have a difficult time coming up with words to say. I hope the program receives enough funds to keep going and growing forever.”

In its first four months, the National Street Harassment Hotline has served more than 125 people like her, all across the country. It is offered toll-free, 24/7, in English and Spanish, by phone and IM chat.

Today, for #GivingTuesday, please donate to help us keep the hotline going and growing!

All money donated beyond the hotline fundraising goal will help fund the 2017 Safe Public Spaces Mentoring teams and allow us to hire a consultant to update the laws relevant to street harassment that are listed state-by-state in our Know Your Rights Toolkit (which we released in 2013).

Please consider making a tax-deductible donation today. Everyone who donates at least $15 will receive these stickers! Our work is possible thanks to the generosity of people like you!
