High school boys terrorize 7th grader

April 19, 2011 By Contributor

Hi, I’m Eve. I’m 13 (grade 7!!), a bit curvy, 5’4, and latina. about two weeks ago i was walking home from King Soopers. At the intersection 4 boys appeared from the high school and we crossed the street together. I was a bit ahead of them when we were done crossing. One of them yelled out, “What a cutie,”. but another said, “I wouldnt pay $50 to pop her cherry!!”

I started walking faster. i didnt once look behind me at them. they sped up. one yelled out, “That tiny, fat slut. Nah i do some things, but get rid of her quick.”

I wanted to run, or at least spin around and kick them in the crotch. but they would just follow me more. let me just say i was just wearing jeans and a t-shirt so i wasnt asking for trouble.

Another one laughed and giggled, “Lets follow her and give her rough time.”

I walked even faster. but they sped up as well.

“Baby, i cant tell what you are by your juicy a**. we dont know how hard to go on you!!”

Now i started walk/jog away from them. They started joging as well. One of them yelled out, “Damn, your packing a**. We’re going to calling you speed racer!! hahaha!!”

After two minutes they stopped by another intersection and i went the other direction. Of course they yelled out, “See ya sweetie. next time we’ll make sure to know ya!!!”

That time i looked at them. i ran home and made sure to use the other way home for now on. Every day i worry about meeting up with them and possibly geting hurt by them. yesterday, i actually saw one of them in King Soopers. he followed me outside and yelled at me, “I miss you!”

Why cant they leave me alone?

“Hey, back there when someone yelled ‘nice ass’ at you… that was me!”

April 1, 2011 By Contributor

My classics from the college years…

I worked for a concert promoter and one night I was waiting outside a rock club to pass out fliers to the people exiting. It was cold, like it is in Chicago. So I had on a big coat. The bouncer let me come into the foyer to get out of the cold, where I took off my coat and he felt it appropriate to say, “I thought you were cute before, but after you took off your coat, I thought, damn, you’ve got a bangin’ bod!”

Walking down the stairs of the L train station in my neighborhood, I heard someone behind me yell, “Hey! Nice ass! NICE ASS!” I hoped against hope that it wasn’t directed at me. I didn’t look back to see. After I exited the station, a man came up to me and tapped me on the shoulder. He said, “Hey, back there when someone yelled ‘nice ass’ at you… that was me! THAT WAS ME!” I was really surprised by his excitement at telling me that he was, in fact, the grotesque man cat-calling me. Until, of course, he explained to me that you are supposed to say ‘thank you’ when someone gives you a compliment. Where were my manners? Then he asked if he could walk me home, to which I declined.

Standing on the corner of Western and Addison, in the winter, snow on the ground, puffy winter coat down to my knees, a man in an SUV made a left turn onto Addison and rolled down his window in the middle of the intersection to yell at me, “That’s a nice pussy!”

None of this made me feel beautiful or special. But it definitely made me uncomfortable and I wanted to hang out at different clubs, move to a new neighborhood, and find a different route to work. I should not be forced to change my life to avoid harassment. I deserve to walk down the streets of my city in peace.

“As soon as I passed, he said, ‘Want some dick?'”

August 30, 2010 By Contributor

I was walking to my office when I passed a man sitting on the side of a pedestrian bridge. He seemed to be talking to himself. Then as soon as I passed, he said, “Want some dick?” I ignored him and kept walking, then he got louder: “Come on!” The further I walked, the less I heard, but he didn’t stop.

I filed a police report.

“Check out the jugs on her”

July 21, 2010 By Contributor

I was cycling home alone along the canal after work yesterday and a group of about 10 male cyclists passed me in the opposite direction. The head of the group shouted, “Check out the jugs on her,” and the rest followed suit with lewd comments of their own. I felt quite angry and swore at them.p

I recounted this story to a female colleague today, and whilst she is of the opinion that they are idiots and shouldn’t have said what they said, she also stated that ‘it’s just a fact of life’, and that men get confused with women wearing lowcut tops and that some women do use their bodies to attract men, and that i just shouldn’t worry about it. I feel like this is a common response to what i felt was harrassment and intimidation. My colleague thinks it’s unlikely that they realised they were being intimidating. I think perhaps it needs spelling out.
