New York City transit rider survey

April 6, 2012 By HKearl

New Yorkers for Safe Transit has a packed schedule of activism coming up, starting with surveying transit riders to document cases of gender-based harassment and violence on the mass transit system. They hope the results will help mobilize communities to join with them and take action.

The survey is anonymous and available online.

Tomorrow will be the first of several days when they will conduct off-line surveys. At 1 p.m. tomorrow, they will meet at the 36th Street subway station in Sunset Park, Brooklyn, to survey neighborhood residents. They need more volunteers to help conduct the surveys. Please contact them if you are interested in helping tomorrow or in future.

Gay & Bisexual Men: Take Survey for Master’s Thesis

March 16, 2012 By HKearl

Most of the work Stop Street Harassment does focuses on the street harassment women (both trans and cis) face, but some men, especially men in the LGBQT community, face it too.

Patrick McNeil is surveying gay and bisexual men about street harassment for his master’s thesis and he’s looking for respondents from anywhere who are 18 years or older. If this applies to you, please take the 15-20 minute survey, and even if it doesn’t apply to you, please share it.

This is a very under-researched topic and your help is greatly appreciated.

Patrick will speak about his preliminary research during an Anti-Street Harassment Week event in Washington, DC, that’s free and open to the public on Wednesday, March 21. Please RSVP if you can attend. In the video below, he shares how he became involved in the topic.

International Anti-Street Harassment Day – Feedback & Ideas for Next Year

May 18, 2011 By HKearl

The first International Anti-Street Harassment Day took place on March 20. Considering it was organized in only a month, I felt it was a big success. You can read a wrap-up article I wrote about it for The WIP.

Please provide your feedback via an online survey about International Anti-Street Harassment Day (even if you didn’t participate). It will take about 5-15 minutes to complete.

* If you participated in International Anti-Street Harassment Day, I want to hear why you decide to participate, what you did, and your ideas for next year.

* If you didn’t participate, I want to hear why not and your ideas for next year.

Thank you. Your feedback will help make next year bigger and better!

Can you predict another person’s actions?

February 24, 2010 By HKearl

Dr. Kimberly Fairchild, co-author of “Everyday Stranger Harassment and Women’s Self-Objectification,” is looking for survey respondents for a new study. Let’s help her out!

“I’m conducting a study on the ability to predict another person’s actions and personality and we need participants. Our research suggests that even from limited information people can make accurate judgments about the dominant traits, emotional reactions, and behaviors of other people.  The survey takes about 20 minutes to complete.  If you are interested in participating, follow the link below.”

Thank you, male allies & survey results

December 17, 2009 By HKearl

Two weeks ago I asked male allies to anonymously let me know their thoughts on how best to educate men about street harassment, engage them in activism, and empower them to do something if they see harassment occurring. This was for a book I am writing on street harassment. The last four chapters of my book focus on multi-layered efforts to end it. Educating men and empowering bystanders are just two of many tactics, but they are very important ones.

Thank you to the 85 allies who took it (and to everyone who passed along the survey to male allies). I already have incorporated several people’s quotes in the sections on bystanders and educating men and the multiple choice responses were useful in helping me decide what to include as realistic initiatives.

I think the survey responses will be useful to others working on this issue, so here they are.
