Video: Meet Us on the Subway

July 17, 2013 By HKearl

Our friend Kara Lieff, Temple University student, made another video about street harassment, “Meet Us on the Subway.”

She writes, “On April 13, 2013 Philadelphia organizations and community members participated in International Anti-Street Harassment Week. The day consisted of sidewalk chalking, discussing HollabackPhilly’s new SEPTA ads, and a debrief in LOVE Park. Three months after the event, we should still be talking about these issues. What do you think?”

Check out Part 1 & Part 2.

Full Video: Street Harassment in Brussels

August 2, 2012 By HKearl

Belgian Sofie Peeters created a documentary about street harassment in Brussels for her school project and it is generating a lot of online conversations and articles. One point of contention is how she says immigrant men are the main people who harass herĀ  (perhaps because it’s a high immigrant area?).

What’s fantastic is how the film seems to be prompting substantial offline action. Hollaback Brussels told me that soon, “in Mechelen [near Brussels] there will be undercover cops handing out fines to harassers.”

I also read that, “A new law is due to come to force this fall in Belgium which will fight street harassment. Victims of leering, honking or whistling and sexual harassment, will have to report a violation so the police can investigate.” I’m researching this law, so stay tuned for more information.

MRC TV posted a video segment that includes an interview with Peeters and her whole video (up to this point, only a two minute preview has been available online). There are English subtitles.

Video: Mumbai Women Speak Out Against Street Harassment

May 9, 2012 By HKearl

From Aditya Pillai via email:

“[This video is part of] a social campaign against Eve Teasing. That is where Indian men just stare at you on the streets, pass really lewd comments, molestation, even kidnap and rape.

It is a horrible experience and no women should have to go through it. It is a form of public sexual harassment of women and a real problem in the Indian sub continent. This kind of violence against the women in India just has to stop. This campaign needs a lot of international eyeballs for people to understand how serious the problem is India.

The campaign includes women from all over Mumbai speaking out against these men. The more people that see this the bigger the voice for women in India.”

Reclaim our humanity

September 18, 2009 By HKearl

From Nuala:

“This is an experimental piece about women ritually facing street harassment as they walk home. It mixes 16mm film, video, poetry and music in an effort to honor and reclaim our humanity in the public sphere. This is for the walkers, talkers and those who say nothing.”
